Glossary
Analogue: all televisions encoded pictures as an analog signal by varying signal voltage and radio frequencies.
Digital:
. Digital TV is a way of receiving your television signal in a digital format. This allows TV companies to broadcast better quality sound, a higher definition picture and a wider range of channels than ever before.
. Digital Film is any storage medium (such as a memory card, diskette, or recordable CD) used in a digital camera to capture and store images. A digital camera may require a particular type of storage medium, or may be compatible with a number of different types.
Satellite: It is delivering television programming using signals relayed from space radio stations (e.g. DVB satellites). The signals are received via an outdoor parabolic reflector antenna usually referred to as a satellite dish.
Cable: Cable television is a system of delivering television programming to paying subscribers via radio frequency (RF) signals transmitted through coaxial cables or light pulses through fiber-optic cables.
Pay per view: A television service in which viewers are required to pay a fee in order to watch a specific programme/Programmes.
Streaming content: Streaming media is video or audio content sent in compressed form over the Internet and played immediately, rather than being saved to the hard drive.
On-demand viewing: All major UK broadcasters make their output available to watch online, via services such as the BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5. All of these are free to watch and allow you to catch up with TV programmes you’ve missed.
Digital recorders: A set-top box also known as a hard drive recorder allows you to record directly to a built-in hard drive, without the need for discs or tapes.
New consumer products:
. Internet TV is video and audio delivered over an Internet connection. You can watch Internet TV on a computer screen, a television screen (through a set-top box) or a mobile device like a cell phone or an ipod.
. Smart TV is any TV that has built-in Internet connectivity, allowing it to access a range of online services including video on demand, social networking and instant messaging.
Film based technologies
High definition: HD refers to a level of detail on screen that provides more fluid video and more vibrant colours. HD follows from standard definition - the level of detail in analogue colour TV.
. 4KUltra HD TVs (also known as UHD TVs) deliver four times as much detail as 1080p FullHD.
. Super HD was introduced by Netflix, it allows viewers to watch programmes in super hd, 1080p video format. Super HD, which is the highest quality video format offered by Netflix.
