How are TV adverts planned?
TV adverts are planned through a number of different stages, the producer of the TV advert has to do complete research before they can begin to think about the advert. They need to find out the target audience so they know who they are aiming at, this will then affect how the product is marketed and how the advert itself will look.
Both primary and secondary research will need to be completed as well as researching competitors adverts and finding out what elements make the advert successful.

Why are TV adverts tested?
TV adverts are tested mainly to see how successful they will be, not only this but they are also tested to make sure that the viewer will remember the important details of the advert and will want to purchase the item advertised.
As well as this TV adverts are tested to ensure that they aren't offensive and sell the featured product well.
An example of this is an advert that would be played during an advert break during the super bowl, if previous adverts have been successful and have made a lot of money, the company are going to want to make sure they can recreate that the following year, the best way to find out if an advert is successful is to test it.

How are TV adverts sold?
TV adverts are sold to broadcasters, if the advert is at a high enough standard the broadcasters will offer a slot for your advert to be shown. If you want your advert to be shown during times when the highest amount of people are viewing the channel then the price will be incredibly higher than being shown at 3 in the morning.
If the advert is aimed at a specific audience, for example it's an advert for mens shampoo then an ideal time for the advert to be shown would be during a program which is dominantly viewed by men however it may cost extra to show your advert during this time.
