Genre: Biography, Comedy, Drama.
The opening sequence for the Intouchables is shot non-linear to the narrative. As the film opens with a police chase it immediately grabs the viewers attention. Once the scene moves on it shows the true genre of the film, it’s comedic nature. Through starting the film with a scene which is in the middle of the films narrative gives the viewer a feel of what the film is going to be like, it pulls the viewer in immediately and keeps their attention as the film progresses.
Intouchables is a realist film, it is based of a true story.
Camera:
The scenes beginning is made up of medium shot, close ups and extreme close up. The use of close ups and extreme close ups on the characters faces gives a sense of what they might be thinking, being able to see their facial expressions allows the viewer to try and pick the characters apart despite the face they haven’t been introduced to the characters yet.
Once the car is shown driving fast the shots change, there are now more long shots. This is to give the viewer a better understanding of what is happening in the scene, it also emphasises the speed in which the car is been driven.
There is one unique shot within this scene, it is a long shot which zooms out as the car speeds forwards. It emphasises the speed of the car but in a clever and unique way. The sequence involving the car speeding down the road uses POV shots, where the camera has been mounted onto the front of the car to, once again, emphasise the speed of which the car is being driven at.
Lighting:
The lighting in this scene is all natural. From the mix of yellow and amber lights on the car and the two characters it visually explains to the audience that this scene is set at night. As the scene begins the soft mix of yellow and orange light helps to set a calming atmosphere, it allows the characters faces to have a soft light upon them which lets the audience view their faces clearly.
Sound:
The scene with non-diegetic, mood music. The scene fades in with soft piano, this coincides with the pace of the editing and the overall atmosphere. The tries to create this peaceful atmosphere when it opens, it has soft lighting, soft piano mood music and editing which matches the pace of the music. The scene begins to increased in pace, this is when diegetic sound is added. The sound of the car engine is added to the scene, after this the sound effect of the car is heard through out the rest of the sequence.
Editing:
The scene begins with nice soft cuts, piecing together medium shots to close ups and then to extreme close ups. All the different camera angles piece together perfectly. As the scene progresses the editing increases in pace, it begins to match the speed in which the car is moving.
Scripting:
Although there is little dialogue within this opening sequence the way in which the dialogue is scripted is very thought through and clever. When you are watching the film for the first time when they bet on whether can lose the police or not portrays the characters as criminals, as if this way their intent. However once you’ve watched the film and then re-watch it you realise that it is actually just a portrayal of their friendship and adds to the comedic aspect.
