Inspiration
Wes Anderson
Wes Anderson is well known not only for his talented film directing but for his style he uses within his films.
Wes anderson is known for his use of distinctive use of colour pallets within his films (examples of this can be seen to the left and below.) For my short film I really want to focus the film around emotions, I feel one of the best ways I can portray this to my audience is through the use of colours. Similar to Wes Anderson, if in my scene the character is experiencing love my idea is to have the characters stood near flowers, manly yellow, pink and reds. I'd like the characters to be wearing pastel colours, which compliment each others and their surroundings. Then I can also alter the colours in post production if it needs it. |
Films
The Mupppets Christmas Carol The main reason why I am using The Muppets Christmas Carol as my inspiration is due to how they visually represent the ghost of christmas future.
I really like the style, the way in which there is no face for this ghost and his appearance gives of an ominous atmosphere. I also like how throughout the scenes in which the ghost of christmas future is in, the ghost does not say a word. All the narrative is carried through body language and Scrooge's dialogue. |

The Fall
The Fall is an incredible film that tells the story about a young stuntman who is in hospital and is paralyzed from the waist down. Whilst in hospital he befriends and young girl with a broken arm, he tells her a story which he uses to manipulate her to get sleeping tablets from him so he can commit suicide.
What I find so inspiring the film is the visual representation of the story. The vivid colours, cinematography and outstanding locations all add together to make it an unforgetable film. I also like the development and friendship which grows between the two protagonists. |
Animes
Colourful
The film Colorful is the biggest inspiration behind my idea.
The film tells the story of a soul being given a second chance at life, the soul is put into the body of a 14 year old boy called Makoto, who commited suicide. The soul has 6 months to find out what led Makoto to commit suicide and how to enjoy life again. If he can't figure out these things Makotos body will really die and the soul will have to rest eternally. What inspired me was not only the interesting narrative but the way the souls are represented in the beginning of the film. I also like the way Purapura, Makoto's guardian angel is represented and the relationship that develops between the two characters. |

Death Parade
After death, there is no heaven or hell, only a bar that stands between reincarnation and oblivion. There the attendant will, one after another, challenge pairs of the recently deceased to a random game in which their fate of either ascending into reincarnation or falling into the void will be wagered. Whether it's bowling, darts, air hockey, or anything in between, each person's true nature will be revealed in a ghastly parade of death and memories, dancing to the whims of the bar's master.
The whole plot of the anime was a huge inspiration for me. I really liked the idea that there was a period of time a human experiences between life and death, which is what I worked on when creating my FMP idea. I was fascinated by the way the show portrays emotions throughout the different episodes and I really liked the use of colours to give it an overall strong aesthetic appeal. As well as this found the soundtrack fitting and atmospheric. I felt as if the soundtrack further enhanced the emotions within the scenes which I would also like to try and use in my short film. (Link takes you to the soundtrack). |
The Ancient Magus Bride
The Ancient Magus Bride is another influence for me.
What I find inspiring is the art style, I really love the character designs as well, especially Elias (shown on the right). I think the design gives a first impression of fear to the audience. However as the character is developed people realise he is not what they first imagined and are drawn into and like his character. |
