One Day, Five People
Themes: Life, Emotions, Fate, Intertwining Paths
One day, 20th of April. 5 lives. 5 different people, all 20 years old.
Each person of the 5 different lives will represent a different emotion.
Person 1 will experience love with person 2. Due to an argument between two people, person 1 is forced to take an alternative path to work. This path leads them to bumping into person 2. Upon them meeting they begin to flirt and exchange numbers. Person 1 later goes to a coffee shop and they see the same person arrive, they are sat admiring them from a distance.
Person 2 will later experience sadness. They day which starts off well quickly turns. After meeting and chatting with person 1 they miss their bus and are forced to walk to work. Once on lunch break they go to get a coffee. When purchasing the coffee they drop the number given to them earlier due to their phone ringing when purchasing the coffee. When they answer the phone they receive bad news and begin to tear up.
Person 3 experiences envy. They are childhood friends with person 1 and has been in love with them for a long time. They witness the events between person 1 and person 2 and is driven into deep envy. They later meet a friend in the same coffee shop which person 2 visits. When talking with their friend, the friend tells them about the great things happening in their life, great paying job, 2 year anniversary with the love of their life, expressing how things couldn't get better for him. This only causes person 3 to become more and more envious.
Person 4 experiences joy. This is the friend which person 3 meets in the coffee shop. His day begins with him waking up to a lovely note from his long time girlfriend. He then finds his favourite breakfast set up ready for him. He finds £5 on the floor on his way to the cafe and feels like his day can't get any better. He enters the cafe to see his friend sat at a table and smiles.
Person 5 experiences anger. After oversleeping from late night drinking he rushes out the house, leaving his wallet behind. Upon arriving at the bus stop he realises he doesn't have his wallet, he begin to mumble under his breath about not having any money for lunch when he remembers the £5 in his phone case. Due to missing his bus he rushes to work. Whilst person 5 is checking his phone his £5 falls out his phone case. He then later goes to pay for his lunch at the coffee shop and realises he has no money and takes his anger out on the employee.

Inspirtation
Films:
CrashCrash is a big inspiration for me, specially for the narrative for this idea. Crash has a narrative in which all the characters come from different backgrounds yet are all directly and indirectly involved in one big plot.
Although not all the character meet, the events which happen to the characters affects other characters. It's a film which can be watched multiple times and the audience feels they always discover something new when watching. Not only does Crash have a strong narrative, it also has wonderful cinematography, soundtrack and acting. Overall there are many aspects which I'd like to recreate in my own way through my own narrative. |
Cloud AtlasLike Crash, Cloud Atlas is another film which has an intertwining narrative. Although different from Crash. Cloud Atlas involves characters from different ages of the earth including past, present and future. The characters stories are all told shortly throughout the film to then form a bigger narrative. The different events that happen in the different ages all affect each other.
As Crash did, Cloud Atlas is a film which the viewer can go back and watch and discover something new each time. As well as it's strong narrative. Cloud atlas also makes incredible use of its actors, reusing the same actors throughout the film to portray the different characters. It also has an incredible soundtrack and wonderful costume design. |
Anime
ErasedErased is an anime which involves a man who is able to have a do over moment in which he has to spot the bad thing and prevent it from happening.
He ends up going back to when he was a boy at school and is given a chance to stop children from the school being kidnapped and murdered. Similar to Crash and Cloud Atlas, Erased has multiple universes, all which Satoru creates when going back to his childhood and present day. This links in with my idea of all the characters being directly and indirectly involved in each others day. Not only does Erased has one of the best narratives in any anime I have seen. It also has a breathtaking art style, soundtrack and unique transitions between shots. I feel that although it is animated, I can use similar technique with my own film. |
