Evaluation
For our News Assignment we had produce three, 2 minute news report, including interviews on a chosen debatable topic. We had to produce a news report following the conventions of three different news channels, these were BBC, Channel 4 and BBC News
Round. We immediately studied the conventions for each different channel so we knew what approach we would have to take when creating our own report, this included looking into the type of clothing, interview techniques and language each different news channel used.
I had multiple roles within this production. I helped present the BBC News Round report, I also recorded sound for the BBC News report and assisted setting up the camera and recording sound for some of the interviews.
Presenting the BBC News Round report was something I haven't done before, it was interesting to see how difficult it is to read from a script without making it seems obvious to the viewer. I also discovered that is difficult to get an interviewee relaxed before recording, this experience has given me a better understanding of creating a relaxed, calming environment before filming an interview.
For the BBC News report we had to ensure our presenter would be wearing formal clothes, use formal language and had to make sure all the information included was informative and relevant. We wanted the interview included with the BBC News report had to be professional, including the name of the interviewee and their relevance to the topic being discussed. As well as this the interviewee had to be wearing formal clothes and respond formally due to our chosen topic discussing euthanasia.
For the Channel 4 report we had to approach it in a similar way to the BBC News, this meant that our presenter and interviewee would all be following similar conventions as the last report.
Lastly for the BBC News Round report we had to approach it differently from the previous two. Unlike BBC News and Channel 4, which are broadcasted to the general public and having strong viewing rates from adults and the elderly. BBC News Round is broadcasted to young teenagers and young adults, it focuses it's content on delivering news which will be informative to a young audience. Knowing this, we made sure our interviews used informal language, we wanted to make sure that the information was clear and easy to understand. We also approached the report the same way, we wanted to make sure the language was easy for a younger audience to understand, along with this we had our presenters and interviewee dress in smart/casual clothing so it was more attracting for our targeted audience.
We encountered multiple problems when filming our different news items, unfortunately we discovered these once all filming had been complete and we were in the process of editing. The issues that we faced were mostly issues with sound. We found out that we plugged our microphone into the wrong input on the camera, this meant that our sound had a very static noise attached with the audio making it difficult to hear the presenter or interviewee. As well as this, a green screen effect that we were trying to create looked unprofessional, this combined with the sound issues we decided it would be best if reshot all our reports and interviews again.
Our reshoots, we felt, were an improvement from our original recordings. Once we'd recorded an audio test we played it back on the Mac, the sound was smooth without any static noise. We also decided to make sure that our reports and interviews were more professional and the dialogue was delivered smoother than our original recording. We also noticed that our choice of clothing was too informal in our previous recordings, therefore when we reshot we ensured that our clothing was formal and professional.
If we were to do a news report project again I think we would approach it similar to this project. We would research the news broadcaster before so we have an idea of their style and techniques, we would also make sure we checked all equipment and sound is working before we filmed anything so we don't have any issues. We would also make sure our interviewees are comfortable before we begin to film them, therefore making the interview look more natural.
