History of TV:
Late 1920 - 1960's
In the late 1920's Television became commercially available. During the war period, TV development was put on hold, news was transmitted manly through radio to prevent countries information from being discovered. In the mid 1960's people began to have access to colour TVs. 1970's - 1998 In 1970 cable TV was invented, this allowed smaller communities to have access broadcasted TV shows. This did cause problems for Cinemas as they faced a sudden decrease in attendees. The creation of the satellite in 1962 led to the creation of Sky TV which launched in 1989. In 1970 VHS was developed, it was extremely popular between 1980 and 1990. However the introduction to DVD in 1997 meant there was a decline in VHS sales. By 2008 DVD had achieved mass acceptance, replacing VHS. 1996 introduced the first HDTV broadcast, meaning that TV programs would be broadcasted at a higher quality than 720p but at 1080p. In 1997 Channel 5 was launched. In the 90's the option to pay per view was introduced. |
2000 - 2012
Between 2006 and 2007 Blu-ray was introduced, although it was brought around the same time as DVD, Blu-ray offered a higher quality picture. In 2005 On demand systems were invented which allowed people to watch shows any when after their broadcast times, this became popular and successful in 2006 - 2007 and is still popular to date. In 2007 A set-top box also known as a hard drive recorder allowed viewers to record directly to a built-in hard drive, without the need for discs or tapes. This became a popular feature which many broadcasting companies adapted to their boxes, e.g. Sky. 2012 saw a big change as the "Digital Switchover" took place on the 17th of October 2007 and finished on the 24th of October 2012. The "Digital Switchover" was when analogue terrestrial television in the United Kingdom was replaced with digital terrestrial television. In 2010 3D TV were invented and released however by 2013 sales of 3D TV had already fallen. Not long after Internet TV became the latest piece of technology, through programmes such as BBC iplayer people are able to watch broadcasted TV shows from the internet, not just TV. Netflix then became the biggest trend, streaming popular and the latest films and TV shows. As of 2016 it has 76 million subscribers and serves over 190 countries. |
The FutureVoice activated TVs are a possibility for the future, this could work alongside Smart TVs.
Using other devices as TV remotes, through downloading an app devices such as Ipods, Ipads and Iphones could be used as remotes. There could be the possibility of streaming sites such as Netflix getting their own channel.
Could make cable TV cheaper due to less people getting it and streaming shows and films online. |
History of Film:
1894
In 1894 Thomas Edison invented the Kinetoscope. The Kinetoscope allowed a strip of film to pass rapidly between a lens and an electric light bulb while the viewer peered through a peephole. Behind the peephole was a spinning wheel with a narrow slit that acted as a shutter, allowing a view of the 46 frames passing in front of the shutter every second. The result was a lifelike representation of persons and objects in motion. |
